Coalfield
Year: 2024
Size: 84.1x59.4x2cm
Materials: wooden panel, willow charcoal
This work came from my visit to Europe's biggest surface coal mine in Ruhr.
It blends multiple time periods at once: when ancient plants grew in these places, when coal formed here under pressure, when the mine began operating, when I saw and captured it open, and now as you look at this drawing.
Not only have I tried to make the temporal connection, but also strengthened it by using coal-related material and the physical pressure of my hand, to create this time portal.
Special thanks to my dear friend Alexandra Koptelova without whom this work would not have happened.
