My research-led practice re-evaluates natural resources through mythical, post-human, and non-extractive lenses, responding to the ecological urgency of our time. My main interest lies in raw materials extracted through mining and quarrying, and the deep-time memories they hold. I look for character and agency in coal, metal, quartz and fresh water, shaping them into sculptural installations and images that blur boundaries between nature and artifice. Digging into the earth is, to me, an act of unearthing ourselves, as we are all part of infinite, ever-transforming matter. Coming from a background in architecture, I became increasingly aware of the contradiction between our material continuity with the Earth and its living systems and the ways raw materials are reduced to commodified resources for extraction and consumption. I work in response to anthropocentric and growth-driven systems that position the Earth as passive matter, disregarding the environmental consequences of extraction and technological expansion. I also explore the material foundations of technologies, tracing how they remain reliant on mining and quarrying of minerals&nbsp;while, at the same time, obscuring their material origins. The note on the tube means that it used to hold a fragment of ice core drilled from Dyer Plateau in Antarctica in the year 1990. So this creature is probably also desperately trying to hide in the past, using this tube as a portal. The creature is made of quartz sandand clay. Sand is dry, and it is the opposite of water, while ice is water. A similar kind of sand, which is high-purity quartz sand, is the backbone of AI technological infrastructure. Glass, optic fiber, and semiconductors fuel the technological expansion that is heating the planet and imbalancing ecosystems. Not only locally where this quartz is extracted, but globally. Motivated by research into polar ice drilling, it reflects on how fresh glacier water and natural cold are becoming some of the most precious resources of the near future and a ground zero for climate change. Inspired by my visit to the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, the piece draws on real scientific and environmental processes. It explores themes of memory, fluidity, and fragility, highlighting the slow yet irreversible release of frozen archives of Earth’s climate data and the loss of fragments of glacier time: trapped air, fresh water, and microorganisms dating back up to 800,000 years. The melting of ancient ice is a process that contributes to rising ocean levels, alters marine ecosystems by increasing water salinity in some areas and diluting it in others, and releases trapped greenhouse gases and ancient carbon dioxide. In the 1st century in the Roman Empire, these bones began to take on a cubic shape. However, in many parts of the world, people still use animal bones to play this game. Since the bones of vertebrates do not decompose but instead become embedded in the Earth’s crust, remains of ancient creatures are often uncovered during mining, making some of the most fascinating discoveries a by-product of resource extraction. Archaeologists, paleontologists, and miners all share an interest in digging, though for different reasons. This work merges elements from the Carboniferous period with modern technologies. The original image was created by scanning bituminous coal and overlaying it on a chemigram developed with a plant-based solution.
